Before you begin
- Connected account with permission to edit the profile
- A photo you may upload
- Phone, tablet or browser for uploading
Make profiles easy to recognise
A clear picture makes it easier to choose the correct profile before watching. Odyssey supports built-in avatars and uploaded profile photos in the app version covered here. Uploading and applying a photo are separate steps: save the profile after the upload finishes.
Use a picture you are authorised to upload. A neutral illustration or personal photo with a simple centre works better than a wide image with important detail near the edges.
Supported upload routes
On iPhone, iPad and Mac (Catalyst), the app profile editor has a native Upload profile photo control. On Apple TV, the editor directs you to upload through Manage on your phone and then reopen the profile. Built-in avatar selection is available in the shared profile editor.
The website’s Manage Player editor also offers Profile photo. The browser upload accepts JPEG, PNG and WebP files. The selected file must be smaller than 16 MB; exceptionally large dimensions or a result that remains too detailed can also be rejected.
If photo upload is absent from your installed app, check its version or use the web editor.
Upload in the iPhone, iPad or Mac player
- Open Settings → Profiles → Manage Family Profiles and choose Edit on the intended profile.
- Under Identity, choose Upload profile photo.
- Select an image and wait while the control shows Uploading photo….
- Check the preview. The editor then shows Photo ready. Save to apply it to this profile.
- Save the profile. Reopen it to check the applied result.
A successful upload alone does not finish the profile edit. If you leave before saving, do not assume the uploaded picture is now the profile picture.
Upload through Manage Player
- Open Manage Player on the Odyssey website and sign in to the correct account.
- In Profiles, choose Edit for the intended person.
- Use the file picker under Profile photo.
- Wait for Photo uploaded. Save the profile to apply it.
- Choose Save profile. On Apple TV, reopen that profile after its account state refreshes.
The browser converts the image to a square preview by filling the square and cropping the excess from the centre. Keep faces and important detail near the middle. This is a profile picture, not a full-resolution photo album.
Replace or return to an avatar
To use another photograph, repeat the upload and save process. To use an Odyssey avatar, choose one under Choose an avatar in the app, or use the Avatar selector in web management, then save.
Selecting a built-in avatar replaces the photo selection for the profile. This guide does not promise that replacing a selection immediately deletes every uploaded asset from storage; it describes changing the profile’s selected picture.
Worked example
Lee wants a recognisable picture on the living-room Apple TV. They open Manage Player on their phone, edit Lee’s profile and choose a square photo with the face centred. After the upload message appears, they save the profile. They then reopen Profiles on Apple TV and check Lee’s card before switching.
If the preview cuts off part of the face, Lee chooses a better-framed original and repeats the edit. Choose a well-framed image before uploading; the web picker applies a centred square crop.
Friend pictures and common problems
The current native Friends list renders a friend’s available avatar or photo, and Series Lock member rows also use available portrait data. You do not upload a picture on a friend’s behalf or control their chosen account image.
Upload rejected: try a smaller JPEG or PNG and keep it under 16 MB. An image that opens normally in a photo viewer can still exceed the upload limits.
Photo uploaded but the card is unchanged: save the profile, then reopen it. Check that you edited the correct account and profile.
Upload failed: verify account access and retry. Do not place account codes or credentials in the image or send them with a screenshot.
No upload button on Apple TV: use Manage Player on your phone. The TV’s profile editor displays the result rather than choosing a local photo.
