A title can have more than one version

A source choice tells Odyssey which available stream or file to play for a title. It can matter when you have the same film in two connected libraries, or when a provider offers more than one edition. A source choice is not permission to access content: you still need the relevant account, source access and rights.

Use this guide when a title opens in the wrong edition, a source fails while another is available, or you want to compare the descriptions before pressing Play. Use Add Source in player management when you need to connect an entirely new server instead.

Open the available choices

  1. Open the title's detail screen. For a series, identify the intended episode first.
  2. Choose Change Source when that action is present. The mobile sheet is titled Choose Source.
  3. Read the source name and detail. The list distinguishes a Primary choice and can place further options under Alternate Sources.
  4. Expand Alternate Sources if shown, then compare the available entries.
  5. Select the entry you want to play. On the mobile flow, choosing an entry closes the sheet and requests playback.

If you only wanted to inspect the choices, use Done on the mobile sheet. On Apple TV, Back closes the source panel before leaving the detail screen. The presence of Change Source depends on whether Odyssey can request source choices for that title.

Decide whether to remember the choice

The source sheet includes Remember this choice. Enable it when you want the selected source to influence later source selection. Leave it off while testing several alternatives, particularly when you are diagnosing a temporary failure.

A remembered choice does not guarantee that the same file will remain available. Providers can change their catalogue or a connected source can be replaced. Return to the source picker when the saved choice no longer resolves, and compare the currently available entries rather than repeatedly retrying a removed one.

Source replacement also affects features that bind to source identities. A saved Channel Studio recipe may need its bindings reconnected independently; selecting another movie source does not repair every saved channel.

Compare two authorised editions

Suppose your home server has a theatrical cut and another authorised library has an extended cut. The longer version may start successfully but place subtitles or an old resume point in an unexpected scene. Open the detail screen, choose Change Source, and inspect the source descriptions before selecting the desired cut.

After the change, check the title, runtime, opening picture and audio. If the descriptions do not identify the edition clearly, verify the file in the original source rather than assuming the first result is the intended one.

When choices are empty or fail

  • No Change Source action: that title or source route may not support a refreshable list of alternatives. A single available file is not evidence of a missing menu.
  • Refreshing sources does not produce a result: check the connected source and the active profile's access. For an episode list, Retry Episodes is available when the detail screen reports the corresponding failure.
  • One option fails, another plays: record the failing option's name and whether the failure occurs immediately or later. This narrows the problem to that route or file without proving its exact cause.
  • The same film plays on a phone but not a TV receiver: receiving devices have their own format and network requirements. Follow the casting guide.

Quick answers

Does changing a source add a new subscription? No. It selects from what the connected sources can provide.

Does an alternative guarantee higher quality? No. Read the supplied detail and test the actual file. A source label is not a quality guarantee.

Should I delete the original source to test another? Usually there is no need. The picker lets you compare available routes without removing the server configuration.
