Before you begin
- Participation in a Series Lock
- Online access for the authorisation check
- The active profile PIN for protected overrides
Why an episode is waiting
A waiting episode means a Series Lock participant has not completed the earlier episode needed for the group to continue. In Separately mode, every participant owns their completion. In Together mode, completion is shared among joined participants.
The waiting rule uses the ordered episode list and earlier completed episodes. Watching ahead does not automatically fill an earlier gap. You may therefore see a watched-ahead count alongside a next episode that appears much earlier.
Review the reason first
- When Odyssey shows Series Locked, read the waiting message. It may name the participants who need to catch up.
- Choose Keep Waiting if you want to honour the existing pace.
- Open the series and choose Manage Series Lock. On Apple TV, this is in the ⋯ menu.
- Check the mode, each participant’s next episode, any watched-ahead counts and pending invitations.
- If someone has completed the episode, confirm they used the participating profile and that their progress could reach the service.
An invitation awaiting acceptance is different from a joined participant with incomplete progress. Manage Series Lock helps you distinguish the two.
Approve the requested episode
- Try to play the episode you intend to watch.
- In Series Locked, enter This profile’s PIN if the lock requires it.
- Choose Watch Anyway.
- Wait for the check to finish. If approved, Odyssey resumes the requested playback action.
The approval applies to that exact episode and playback attempt. It is not an app-session unlock. The server authorises the specified series and episode. The app then consumes a short-lived, single-use approval for that request. A later episode must pass its own check.
Keep the active profile unchanged during the prompt. Changing profiles or account access invalidates the context of an outstanding approval. A profile-entry PIN unlock and an Adult-section PIN session are separate controls.
Worked example
Avery has completed episode three; Chris has only completed episodes one and two. Avery tries episode four and sees a wait for Chris. Avery chooses Keep Waiting for their planned shared viewing routine.
On another occasion, both agree Avery can watch ahead. Avery tries episode four again, enters their own profile PIN if required and chooses Watch Anyway. That approval does not mark Chris’s earlier episode complete. It does not give Avery unrestricted access to episode five. Later progress still follows the selected Together or Separately rule.
When approval fails
“Check your PIN and connection”: verify that you are using the PIN for the active participating profile. A source password, full management code or another profile’s PIN is not a replacement.
The button is disabled: a protected challenge requires a non-empty PIN, and controls remain disabled while the request is running. Wait for the result before trying again.
Access could not be checked: reconnect and retry. The app checks the lock with the service before allowing a managed episode; a failed network request does not mean that the lock has been removed.
The wrong episode is waiting: review the series match and episode numbers. If the source entry lacks reliable series information, refresh its metadata before making progress changes.
Progress still appears old: check the right profile and reopen the management view. Avoid repeatedly marking unrelated episodes watched just to move the boundary.
Change the longer-term arrangement
Use Watch Anyway for a specific exception. If the group no longer wants a waiting rule, the creator can use Remove Lock. Other eligible participants can use Leave Lock. The current management screen does not expose a permanent “ignore this lock” toggle.
Removing a lock does not provide a missing stream, restore provider access or remove other content restrictions. The usual source, profile and playback checks still apply.
Quick answers
Does entering the PIN unlock the whole evening? No. Series Lock approves one requested episode through a single-use playback hand-off.
Does Watch Anyway make everyone caught up? No. Approval and completion are separate. Completion afterwards follows the lock’s mode.
Can I keep waiting without entering a PIN? Yes. Choose Keep Waiting to close this challenge.
